Preparation under way for new Beg Steal Borrow films

Beg Steal Borrow News, New projects

Preparations are under way for a whole slate of Beg Steal Borrow productions.

First off, there is a film called Selfie, an essay-film that blends fiction and documentary and which consists uniquely of selfies of/by William Brown. William has nearly finished all photography for this film, having been actively shooting during February and March 2014.

The film is a consideration of the selfie phenomenon – but made ‘from within’ (i.e. by taking selfies). Selfie features sequences shot in London, Basel, Paris, Seattle and elsewhere.

Beg Steal Borrow are also hoping to bring to production a pair of films over the summer. The first, tentatively entitled The Life Automatic, is about a young girl who must find her friend in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, in order to return to her some money that she has ropped.

The second, provisionally called The Rebirth of Metaphysics, is a London-based film shot in two parts, the first about a young boy who befriends a tramp, and the second about the rocky nature of the marriage of the child’s parents.

Cinematographer Tom Maine and director William Brown are also in discussion to find dates to begin shooting a vox pop documentary in London called Circle/Line, in which the filmmakers, in the spirit of Chronicle of a Summer and Le Joli Mai, ask Londoners how they are feeling.

Finally, various of the Beg Steal Borrow team have submitted an application to the iFeatures scheme run by Creative England, the BFI, BBC Films and Creative Skillset, in order to win money to produce William’s script, Assisted Living, which is a quasi-autobiographical account of a weekend-in-the-life of a middle class family in Worcestershire.

Fingers crossed that the application garners some interest!

Common Ground has screening in Preston

Beg Steal Borrow News, Common Ground, Screenings

Beg Steal Borrow’s third feature, Common Ground, has enjoyed a screening at the University of Central Lancashire in Preson.

Director William Brown was invited to introduce the film to various students and staff members at the university, in particular those studying a course on British cinema with Professor Ewa Mazierska.

William spoke about zero-budget filmmaking in contemporary Britain with an enthusiastic group of students, before holding the screening to a gathered audience of around 30 people.

Common Ground was screened at UCLan on 7 April 2014.

William was delighted by the invitation – and considers it a real honour to be considered a filmmaker of sufficient significance (?!) to be a representative of contemporary British cinema – even if only of the possibilities that zero-budget filmmaking opens up for contemporary filmmaking in Britain.

The screening took place on 7 April 2014.

Beg Steal Borrow enters a new domain

Beg Steal Borrow News, endemic, Uncategorized, Ur: The End of Civilization in 90 Tableaux

Beg Steal Borrow is pleased to announce that it has secured the new domain name for its website, http://www.begstealborrowfilms.com.

This means that Beg Steal Borrow is upgrading from being a WordPress site to its own, dedicated site.

This is simply the next step in the evolution of the enterprise from handmade beginnings to, well, slightly less handmade continuations.

Evidently, do check out Beg Steal Borrow on Facebook, as well. And check out the possibility of watching Beg Steal Borrow productions on Vimeo (hopefully to be announced officially in the near future).

Finally, do keep reading for updates on Ur: The End of Civilization in 90 Tableaux, our forthcoming feature, and other projects here…

Afterimages screenings in Lithuania

Afterimages, Beg Steal Borrow News, Screenings

While we are putting the finishing touches to Ur: The End of Civilization in 90 Tableaux, the other Beg Steal Borrow films continue to eke out an existence of their own…

Afterimages has just enjoyed two screenings on 18 December 2013 at the Kedainiai Sviesioji gymnasium in Kedainiai City, Lithuania. The screenings were arranged courtesy of Benita Paplauskaitė, a film student at the University of Roehampton, London, and who occasionally gives classes when she returns home during the vacations.

Having seen Afterimages over the course of her studies at Roehampton, Benita decided to show the film to students at the gymnasium. Here is some of the feedback that Benita provided on how the screenings went.

“I just came back from school it was so much fun! Don’t even know where to start. So we had two screenings today and there were about 80 people overall (40 in the first screening and 40 in the second).

“They are all in the 11th grade (17 year olds). Everyone was really excited and it was so funny to watch their reactions. Most of the people found the film hard to understand. Very interesting thing – girls got it better than boys. Everyone got their own idea what the film was about. Some said it was about isolation, others thought it was about relationships. We had a short discussion with one of the classes and students had many questions and comments.

“The funniest and most interesting for me came from one girl who said: ‘The film was just like Hamlet – so smart yet so hard to understand.’ I asked them why they find the film hard to understand and they all agreed that it is most likely because of the film’s pace. They found it hard to stop and relax and came up with an idea that the film takes you out of reality, routine, yet it is still purely about the routine itself (if that makes sense).

“Everyone really enjoyed the ending! I wish you could have seen it (those cruel Lithuanians).

“Overall, students said that it was very intelligent film.”

We feel enormously flattered both by the screenings themselves – and also about the wonderful and engaged feedback offered. (Especially any feedback that suggests the movie is ‘intelligent’!)

So our thanks go to Benita for her arranging of the screening – and to all those who watched the film.

Afterimages also enjoyed a screening in early 2013 at the University of Tübingen, Germany, courtesy of Rainer Schelkle. It’s nice to know that Afterimages therefore continues to have an afterlife…

Ur Teaser Online Now!

Beg Steal Borrow News, Ur: The End of Civilization in 90 Tableaux

The first teaser for Ur: The End of Civilization in 90 Tableaux is now online!

The teaser features music from the multi-talented Giles Hayter, one of The King’s Will (with Musa Okwonga), who also provided music for Common Ground in the form of their excellent track ‘The Swords Are Coming.’

Giles has also recently found great success in the guise of Professor Mathmo, and his pedagogical album, Professor Mathmo and the Voyage to the Times Tables.

William is happy to confess that the trailer was also inspired by the trailer for Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (2010).

Check it out!

Meanwhile, work on Ur is ongoing – we are now deep into post-production – and are hoping to have the film ready for screening in the not-too-distant future!

Busy Beg Steal Borrowers

Beg Steal Borrow News, Friends of Beg Steal Borrow

This is just a quick update to say how busy some of the Beg Steal Borrow collaborators have been of late.

Firstly, producer Deanne Cunningham has been up in Leeds working on the fothcoming series of Utopia.

Secondly, Alex Chevasco, star of En Attendant Godard, Common Ground and Ur: The End of Civilization in 90 Tableaux, has made it through to quarter finals of the Final Draft Big Break Contest with a TV pilot about the USA’s first African-American composer.

Charlotte Wolf, meanwhile, will be taking up an exciting opportunity in the new year to teach filmmaking to potential cineastes in Sierra Leone.

Tom Maine and Andrew Slater continue to be busy with their various productions – and Nick Marwick, who acted in Afterimages and Common Ground, has also taken his first steps into film and television production.

Well done and good luck to all Beg Steal Borrowers!
